A Coatbridge construction company has teamed up with a charity for the blind in a Challenge Anneka style spectacular-after reading about their plight in the Evening Times.
Sterling Choice stepped in to save the day having learned about Cue and Review Recording Service in the September 6 edition of the ET.
The charity, which specialises in talking newspapers, was quoted £67,000 to refurbish their ageing Bishopbriggs headquarters. Remarkably Sterling Choice has agreed to carry out the project for just £7,500, and to enlist other equally kind hearted companies willing to provide their time and resources for free, just like Anneka Rice did on her early nineties hit show.
Already suppliers C.C.S and JD Flooring have generously contributed sanitary ware and £1,000 worth of flooring respectively, now Cue and Review need donors capable of providing light fittings, electrical cabling, radiators, fire doors, insulation and a bespoke reception desk-to make their dream of sparkling new state of the art studios come true.
Earlier this year Cue and Review ‘Print Speaking to the Blind’ received a Scottish Government Grant, the vast majority of which has been allocated to the crucial installation of studio equipment, leaving only £7,500 left over to transform the interior of their Crowhill Road premises, which has scarcely changed since its construction 20 years ago.
This kind of project is completely unprecedented at Sterling Choice. It poses a unique challenge, but one that the company led by Melvin Murray is ready and willing to embrace. Charmaine Murray, Sterling Choice’s Office Administrator, is especially passionate about charity, as her mother was visually impaired. Charmaine, 44, said: “My mother was registered blind before she died 13 years ago, so as soon Cue and Review was mentioned I was interested. She didn’t know about talking newspapers, if she had it would have been great.”
Cue and Review’s MD Alastair McPhee commented: “We’re amazed by Sterling Choice’s offer to do the refurb for just £7,500, its fantastic. They have been excellent, they understand how important the service we offer to Scotland’s visually impaired people is, and thanks to them we should be able to continue offering that service for a long time. We’re very grateful for all the donations so far.”
